Achievement Recognition Awards

Semester Recognition Awards:
 GRADE 8 & 9 ACHIEVEMENT RECOGNITION:

BROCK AMBASSADOR (ACHIEVEMENT) Award:

This is a semester recognition of achievement for students Grades 8 -9.

  • Achievement is calculated based on top proficiency marks (Extending and Proficient) calculated from final proficiencies given at the end of each semester in all courses. With a maximum of 1 ‘Developing’ mark per Semester.
  • Emerging marks will disqualify a student from receiving a Brock Ambassador Award.
  • If a student receives an ‘Insufficient Evidence’, the student will have 10 days from the learning updates are distributed to convert IE to a proficiency. (Unless there are extenuating circumstances.)
  • Must be enrolled in a minimum of three curriculum-based courses per semester.
  • Students will be recognized at the end of each semester.
 GRADE 10, 11 & 12 ACHIEVEMENT RECOGNITION:
BROCK HONOURS Award:
  • This is a semester recognition of achievement for students Grades 10-12.
  • Average mark must be 80% or higher in all course based on final marks for each final reporting period (end of each Semester).
  1. No mark can be below 60% including dual credit courses and Sampler program.
  2. For Grade 12 students, students must have an average of 80% or higher in each course based on marks in Semester 1 and Term 3.
  3. Any linear (year-long) courses that qualify will have the third term reporting period mark considered.
  • Must be enrolled in a minimum of three curriculum-based courses per semester. Courses which will not be considered for Academic Achievement award include: IDS, Learning Assistance, Peer Tutoring, Work Experience, TA, Youth Work in Trades (SSA), and Study.
  • Failing a course will disqualify a student from the Brock Honours Award.
  • If a student receives an ‘Insufficient Evidence’, the student will have 10 days from when the learning updates are distributed to convert the IE to a percentage. (Unless there are extenuating circumstances.)

HONOURS WITH DISTINCTION (Grade 10, 11 and 12):

  • This is a semester recognition of outstanding achievement for students in Grades 10, 11 and 12. Eligibility will be determined based on the following criteria:
  • Students must have 86% or higher in every course based on final marks for each final reporting period (end of each Semester).
  1. No mark can be below 60% including dual credit courses and Sampler program.
  2. Any linear (year-long) courses that qualify will have the third term reporting period mark considered.
  3. For Grade 12 students, students must have 86% or higher in each course based on marks in Semester 1 and Term 3.
  • Must be enrolled in a minimum of three curriculum-based courses per semester. Courses which will not be considered for Academic Achievement award include: IDS, Learning Assistance, Peer Tutoring, Work Experience, TA, Youth Work in Trades (SSA), and Study.
  • Failing a course will disqualify a student from the Brock Honours with Distinction Award.
  • If a student receives an ‘Insufficient Evidence’, the student will have 10 days from the report cards are distributed to convert the Incomplete to a percentage. (Unless there are extenuating circumstances.)

CITIZENSHIP AWARDS for GRADES 8 – 12:

This is a semester recognition award, to recognize and honor students who demonstrate exceptional dedication, initiative, and service to our school community and demonstrate our school values of Courage, Compassion and Curiosity.

Students are nominated by Brock staff members.

Students will be nominated based on:

1. Community Involvement:

  • Active participation in school clubs, organizations, or volunteer activities.
  • Consistent and enthusiastic involvement in school events and initiatives.
  • Demonstrates leadership roles within school groups or committees.

2. Positive Impact:

  • Has a positive influence on the school and classroom climate and culture.
  • Promotes a welcoming and inclusive environment for all students.
  • Resolves conflicts peacefully and encourages cooperation among peers.
  • Shows empathy and compassion for others.

3. Service to Others:

  • Unselfishly helps others, both inside and/or outside of the school.
  • Goes above and beyond to assist teachers, staff, and fellow students.
  • Shows respect for all members of the school community.

Nomination Process: Students will be nominated by staff. Final decisions will be made by the Awards and Scholarship Committee.

BROCK STRONG (Effort) AWARDS for Grades 8 - 12:

This is a semester recognition award to honour grade 8-12 students who demonstrate exceptional work ethic in their daily classroom activities. These students contribute to our Brock Community and are dedicated to our school values of Courage, Compassion and Curiosity.

Students are nominated by Brock staff members.

Students will be nominated based on:

1. Active Participation:

  • Regularly participates in class discussions/activities and asks thoughtful questions and contributes meaningful ideas.
  • Listens attentively to their peers and teachers.
  • Sets and achieves personal learning goals.

2. Consistent Effort:

  • Completes assignments and homework on time.
  • Strives to do their best work, even when faced with challenges.
  • Perseveres through difficult tasks and seeks help when needed.

3. Positive Attitude:

  • Demonstrates a positive and respectful attitude towards their peers and teachers.
  • Shows enthusiasm for learning and a willingness to try new things.
  • Maintains a positive growth mindset and embraces feedback to improve their work. 

Nomination Process: Students will be nominated by staff. Final decisions will be made by the Awards and Scholarship Committee.

Year-End Recognition Awards:
TOP ACADEMIC STUDENT AWARDS (Grade8-12)

This award is given to a student, at each grade level, who demonstrated overall excellence and outstanding performance in all areas of study.

GRADE 8 and 9 Top Academic Student awards are calculated based on top proficiency marks (Extending and Proficient) calculated from final marks given in Semester 1 and Semester 2 for all required courses.

  • An Emerging or Failing final course mark will disqualify a student from the Brock Honours Award.
  • If a student receives an ‘Insufficient Evidence’, the student will have 10 days from the report cards are distributed to convert the Incomplete to a percentage. (Unless there are extenuating circumstances.)

GRADE 10, 11 and 12 Top Academic Student awards are based on the highest average percentage calculated using a minimum of 6 curriculum-based courses.

  • Failing a course will disqualify a student from the Brock Honours Award.
  • If a student receives and ‘Insufficient Evidence’, the student will have 10 days from the report cards are distributed to convert the Incomplete to a percentage. (Unless there are extenuating circumstances.)

In situations where a tie exists, every effort will be made to award all students affected by the tie.

When this is not possible, a thorough review, led by the principal and counselling department, will be conducted to examine aspects of program rigor, student effort, attendance etc.

Final decisions on Top Academic Student awards will be made by the Awards and Scholarship Committee.

PRINCIPAL’s LIST (Grade 10, 11 and 12):

This is an annual recognition of outstanding achievement for students in Grades 10, 11 and 12. For Grade 10 and 11 students, this award is given in the fall of the following school year as it is based on final letter grades. Grade 12 students will receive their PRINCIPAL’s LIST AWARDS at the year-end awards assembly.

Eligibility will be determined based on the following criteria:

  • Student must achieve Honours with Distinction in each Semester consecutively.
  • For Grade 12 students, students must have 86% or higher in each course based on marks in Semester 1 and Term 3.
  • Any linear (year-long) grade 12 courses that qualify will have the third term reporting period mark considered.

Failing a course will disqualify a student from the Brock Honours Award.

If a student receives an ‘Insufficient Evidence’, the student will have 10 days from the report cards are distributed to convert the Incomplete to a percentage. (Unless there are extenuating circumstances.)

Students must be enrolled in a full-time program and have a minimum of 6 curriculum-based courses over the school year.

  • Early graduates are eligible for Principal’s List if their final marks in each course are 86% or higher. The calculation will be determined by eight course count; therefore, students’ grade 11 semester 2 marks will be considered for early grads.
  • On-line courses can count as part of the 6 curriculum-based courses. On-Line courses must be completed with a Final Mark allocation by the end of Term 3.

WILL BLAIR AWARDS of INTEGRITY for GRADES 8 - 12:

Will Blair, a former special education teacher at Brock, significantly impacted students with diverse needs. He was an advocate for implementing a trauma-informed approach, ensuring every student received the understanding and support they deserved. The Will Blair Award honours a student who exemplifies:

  • Perseverance and resiliency in the face of challenges.
  • A steadfast commitment to their goals.
  • Integrity and ethics in their actions.
  • A growth mindset by embracing learning opportunities and showing remarkable personal growth.
  • Inspire others to strive for excellence and navigate their own journeys with purpose.
  • Students are nominated by Brock staff members.

Nomination Process: Students will be nominated by staff. Final decisions will be made by the Awards and Scholarship Committee.

Graduation Awards:
GOLD CORD RECIPIENT (Grade 12):

Gold Cord will be presented each year at our Graduation Commencement ceremonies. Eligibility is based on both historical and current year marks data as defined below:

  1. Must maintain Principal’s List Status for Grade 10, 11 and 12.
  2. For Grade 12 is calculated based on Semester 1 and Term 3.
  • Any linear (year-long) courses that qualify will have the third term reporting period mark considered.

RED CORD RECIPIENT (Grade 12):

Red Cord will be presented each year at Graduation Commencement ceremonies.

Students who are in the top 5% of their grad class and are recognized at District Honours will receive the red cord achievement.

Each year SD73, hosts a reception to recognize the top 5% of graduating students from each secondary school.

Grade point averages are calculated on the basis of the top 6 grade 12 curriculum-based courses:

  • This includes TRU Start courses if the school has received a final mark.
  • Excluding IDS, TA, Peer Tutoring, SSA and Work Experience.
  • This must include English 12 or English First Peoples 12 and CLC12 for non-YTIT Candidates.
  • Top six marks will be a combination of: final marks for Semester 1, current Term 3 marks and/or any historical marks if qualifiers are early grads.
  • Marks from a grade 12 course completed in the final semester of grade 11 may be used to meet the criteria. On-line courses can be used if there is a final mark. Insufficient Evidence can be reviewed (ie: medical reasons).
  • Any linear (year-long) courses that qualify will have the third term reporting period mark considered.

Failing or IE (Insufficient Evidence) in any term will disqualify a student from the Brock Honours Award.

Students in specialized programs must meet expectations as outlined by SD73’s District Honours Criteria.

GOVERNOR GENERAL’s – BRONZE MEDAL

The Governor General’s Award is presented to a grade 12 student at the Commencement ceremony in the following year to when the student graduated.

  • This medal is awarded to the student who achieves the highest average upon graduation for their secondary school.
  • The average includes all grade 11 and 12 courses as listed on the student’s official Transcript of Grades as issued by the Ministry of Education.
  • This award is based on final letter grades only.
  • Courses taken after graduation do not count towards this award.
